When it comes to musculoskeletal disorders, patients always get confused about the treatment. Unlike most other illnesses or disorders, this particular branch doesn’t have just one kind of treatment available. People are divided between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist.

At Family Chiropractic & Wellness, several patients have asked us this question before. They want to know what the difference between the two branches of alternative medicine. Here’s the gist of it:

What are They?

Chiropractic is a profession that includes diagnosing, treating, and preventing any musculoskeletal problems. It addresses the effects of these problems on your general health and the function of the nervous system.

Problems usually occur in the musculoskeletal system due to a variety of reasons. These can be because of injuries, accidents, poor posture, illness, inactivity, stress, or even daily wear and tear. Chiropractors believe that these things can put pressure on the nerves in the body.

Physiotherapy is similar to chiropractic in some ways. It’s essentially a way to diagnose and treat problems caused by injury, disability or illness. The aim is to restore function and full range of movement wherever possible.

One would say that physiotherapy is more focused on the injury and disability, and how a patient can manage pain and recover from them. The aim is to slowly develop full range of independent movement or get accustomed to limited range.

How Do they Work?

Chiropractic care involves adjustments and manipulation of the entire spinal cord. A chiropractor will use specific adjustments or manipulations to release pressure that’s placed on the nerves. While we work primarily with the spine, we also address issues with other joints as well. The idea is to promote the body’s ability to heal by restoring the spinal alignment.

We’ll also give patients advice on proper diet and exercise, along with lifestyle and proper posture to promote general health.

On the other hand, a physiotherapist can work with general health, but they focus on disability and injury-related problems. They utilize exercise and movement to encourage the patient and slowly heal the body. They use manual therapy as well as counseling and advice to help people recover their body’s movement and move past any pain.
