shutterstock_210565228It’s officially Christmas shopping season. Long lines at the mall put stress on more than our wallets this time of year. The holiday rush can take a toll on our bodies too. Consider the following tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy and happy this holiday shopping season.

  • Take frequent breaks, and drink plenty of water.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with adequate cushioning in the soles to absorb the impact of walking.
  • Because you will likely be going in and out of buildings, be sure to wear layers.
  • Carry a small purse with only the essentials to avoid adding extra pressure to your joints from the weight of a heavy purse.
  • When wrapping gifts, stand at a countertop or sit at a chair and table. Wrapping gifts on the floor puts strain on the body which could lead to injury.

Extended shopping hours can lead to muscle cramps, neck stiffness and back pain. While standing in line, be sure to shift your weight from one foot to the other often to give your body a postural break. You should also perform the following stretches to keep your body from cramping up.

  • Stand on one foot while you rotate the opposite ankle and then switch legs.
  • Stretch your calves by leaning forward on your toes, keeping your legs straight. Slightly bend your knees and then straighten them and repeat.
  • Stretch your thigh muscles by tightening them for 5 seconds and releasing.
  • Stretch your shoulders by rolling them backwards several times.
  • Stretch your chest by pulling your shoulder blades together.

The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but don’t forget to take time to take care of your body. Keeping your body healthy will make this holiday season even brighter.
