It’s harder to stay active and healthy in the winter months. Below are 5 tips that can help you stay ahead of old man winter.

Bundle Up

It goes without saying, but when it’s cold or even chilly always wear warm clothing. Pay extra attention to wrapping up your neck and waist. Wear a scarf to protect your neck from wind and drafts. Make sure your coat covers and protects your lower back. Wearing clothing in layers is also a good idea.

Keep Your Head Covered

Remember your grandma telling you to cover up your head or put on a hat because you’ll catch a cold? Listen to your grandma. Did you know that you lose most of your heat from your head? Wet hair accelerates heat loss. Do not go out into the cold with a wet uncovered head!

Watch Your Step

Icy winter conditions can be dangerous if you are outdoors.

  • Walk slowly and shuffle with your feet close to the ground, arms extended to your sides if you need extra balance.
  • Wear insulated, anti-slip footwear with rubber tread.
  • Watch where you are walking. You don’t want to miss a slippery patch of ice because you are on your smartphone.
  • If you do slip, try to relax and fall on your side.

Shovel Safely

Shoveling posture is important. Don’t hunch over when shoveling, straighten up your back to reduce the stress on your spine. Invest in a quality ergonomic shovel with an over sized, ridged grip handle for comfort and a secure hold.

Stay Active

Cold winter weather doesn’t provide much motivation to exercise. Keep active, stay limber and remember that at the very least exercising warms you up and gets the blood pumping. You will also benefit from the feel good hormones during this time of year when we are more susceptible to depression.
